What an esthetician actually does
An esthetician is a licensed skincare professional. In Florida the licence is called a Facial Specialist, and it covers facials, chemical exfoliation, extractions, waxing and hair removal, lash and brow work, and skincare consultation. It does not cover cutting hair or medical procedures – that line matters, and the state enforces it.
The Florida requirements, plainly
To work as a facial specialist in Florida you need to be at least 16, have completed the required training hours at a licensed school, and register with the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Florida’s facial specialist route is one of the shorter paths into a licensed beauty career – which is exactly why so many people start here and add a second licence later.
How long it takes
Faster than most people expect. Because the facial specialty programme is focused, students often finish in a matter of months rather than years, and full-time and part-time schedules both exist. The real variable is not the hours – it is how much time you spend on a live clinic floor before you graduate.
What it costs – and what it does not
Tuition varies by school. What matters more is what is included: kit, books, and state exam fees are sometimes bundled and sometimes not. Ask. The Beauty Institute participates in federal financial aid programmes for students who qualify – see financial aid before you assume you cannot afford it.
Is it worth it?
Honestly, it depends what you want. If you want a fast, portable licence and the option to work in a spa, a med-spa, a salon, or for yourself renting a room – it is one of the better-value credentials in beauty. If you want to do hair as well, look at cosmetology instead, which is broader but longer. If you want both skin and nails, the full specialty route combines them.
We would rather you pick the right licence than the one that sounds best.
